Praise is a Reward for Positive Behavior. They respond very well to upbeat, happy voices- so whenever you feel they have done something good, a behavior you would like for them to continue in the future, such as sitting calmly and quietly watching, feel free to reinforce that you are happy, which makes them happy to please! )
Step 1: The Setup Area:
Playpen Suggestion for the puppy's beginning contained play & sleep area
- The first step to housetraining, is setting up your playpen (or temporarily, bathtub) for the new puppy to stay in when you aren't able to take him or her outside. Puppies can sleep in your playpen or master bath tub at night with paper on one end and a doggie bed, and toys, on the other so they can use the paper when you are busy, and cant stop to take them outside when needed.
- Either put down a new sheet of paper on top if there's a wet one in the am, or take them outside to play, and go "Hurry up". This set up will work while pups are young enough not to get out of your tub.
- As you have done this for a few weeks, you can begin taking your puppy outside more often for the hurry-up break, whenever you can in order to begin forming a routine for the puppy in their at your home. Consistently hearing the words "hurry up" in an encouraging tone, most pups quickly learn it means go to the bathroom and will do so almost on command. This makes your job much easier when working to housebreak your pup!
- Its good to go out the same door each time you go outside with your puppy so that in the future your beagle will know where to run to when its time to go out.
- When the Puppy is ready to crate train, he or she will let you know because the paper will be dry several mornings in a row. This means his bladder is able to hold it all night, and you can just move his bed into the crate.
This usually happens around 14 -15 weeks old.
