Your Puppy Flying Home!

Read this page to see what you will need to do to get your puppy home safely! Flight option include:

-Shipping available via PetSafe, United, or Delta dash
-Flying out and coming to our house to meet us and pickup your puppy to fly home on board the plane, or
-Flying out & meeting us at the airport if that works better for you.

We offer shipping out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The airlines we utilize are Continental Airlines 's PetSafe service or Delta's PetFirst out of the Charlotte Douglas Internation Airport.
We ask that our customers line up the shipping details with us for their puppy due to the fact that there are just so many different airlines in different parts of the country.

Airlines: Continental PetSafe or Delta Petfirst

We now prefer to use Continental Pet Safe, because of their effiecient handling. The pets are transported in pet-friendly heated and air conditioned vans, and are never left subject to the heat and cold of the day.There are no weather restrictions for shipping via Continental Airlines.
If you do go with Continental, please let them know our known shipper ID number- it makes things go much faster & smoother since we have been approved by the head of Continental Pet Safe during an in-home meeting & inspection of our kennel. Our know shipper number is 001737002 - Thanks!!

If flying via Delta, it must first be confirmed that the time of year and its weather conditions will allow us to safely send a puppy to your area. While we prefer Continental, there may be some areas of the country that they do not reach, so we also like Delta in those cases. Delta does a superior job compared to other airlines we've dealt with, so if getting a flight works out better through Delta, that is fine too.

Contenintal allows year round shipping due to their methods, so typically this will be the prefferred airline.

Compare Schedules

    Let us know what days are a possibility for you, and I can compare family's schedules to find the best day for everyone for a trip to the airport. We typically like to schedule puppies for airport trips on the same day if possible, and hopefully times after 1:00.
    We live about 2 hours from the airport, and we also must be at the airport to check in 2 hours before the departure time.
    In the morning we tend to all our responsibilities around here, and feed the puppies, give them a nice warm bath, and allow them ample time for a hurry up break before loading up the car for a road trip to the airport.
    The courier(s) must leave here about 4 hours before departure time, and the puppies are walked again there at the airport for one last hurry up break before checking in and boarding their flight home!

We like to do afternoon flights, preferrably times after 1:00, and hopefully times that coorespond with any other puppies' flight times, so that the puppies can be checked in at the same time, rather than wait around at the airport in Charlotte. Let us know all your possibilities and we can go from there!

Booking Flights

You are allowed to book a puppy's flight within a week of departure, and there is no fee or charge to book or cancel a flight. By booking a flight you are just saving a space, getting your foot in the door, for the flight home! If plans change before shipping day, flights can easily be changed without any charge, so no worries when it comes to booking your puppy's flight through Continental or Delta, you can easily change it to another day if needed.

These days puppies are well cared for when shipped with with our preferred airlines.. they go into heated and A/C cabin area and are allowed to go home right away once they arrive so most just lay back and sleep for the trip to their new family!
We also have calming biscuits and herbal drops that we can give your puppy prior to checking in if you prefer they nap on their way home in the plane.

add $5.oo in to your payment if youd like us to provide this service ... we can also include a few of the biscuits in your pups health folder so you will have them when it arrives for that first night home in a new place ! The health folder will be under the pups bed inside the crate when it arrives.

Homecoming

If you decide that you will need to make other arrangements to get your puppy home, many families drive to our area often, from states as far as Ohio, Indiana ect. They use this trip as an excuse for a family vacation or lil getaway.

Others choose to fly out themselves, and take the puppy back with them on board the plane, the airlines allow smaller pets as a carry ons.

If you choose to fly out here, and fly back with your new baby, you can choose to taxi or rent a car our to our location, or we may be able to meet you at the airport, like we have done in the past!

In Winter! We are able to ship with Delta as long as it doesn't go below 20 degrees that day..
with Continental shipping is without restriction year round.

The airplanes have heated and pressurized compartments nowadays where the animals are so there is no waiting outside at all for the pups.. but lots of our recent customers have been driving down to North Carolina lately so they can come enjoy our state and take home their pup ..so.. If you are thinking of getting a puppy from out of state, as an option, you may consider driving down to visit our part of the country, maybe take a weekend away from the city and enjoy the mountains, or the antique stores in nearby Waxhaw..nc. What you Need to have your puppy fly home. This must all be done before homecoming day.
Some of these are also required for those who flying out & driving over to our home, or meeting us at the airport.

about the possible flights, and then contact us to compare our avaialble days with yours before actually booking your puppy's flight.

Depending on which Airline serves your part of the country best, you can determine which you would prefer to use. Keep in mind whether weather/temperature restrictions may apply that time of year if using Delta, in which case Continental would need to be used. Through Continental Pet Safe or Delta Pet First your puppy will travel from origin to destination with priority.
Once you know which airline you are using, we ask that you handle the flight details with Continental or Delta on your end. After discussing possible days and times for an airport trip with us, we can all settle on a good day, and you can then book your puppy's flight home. It does not cost to book a flight, and booking can easily be changed or cancelled. We prefer you book the flight for any time after 2 pm out of Charlotte Douglas International airport.

For Delta, there is a 2:15 & a 4:00 flight which goes to Atlanta and connects to your airport from there. If there is a direct flight close to these times, or perhaps a little later, let us know and you may be able to book that flight instead. Similar times with Continental work best for us, and they connect in Texas or Newark.

Puppies have to be checked in at the airport 2 hours before departure time, and we like to allow 2 hours for the couriers to get there from our house. In the morning, we first feed the puppies and let them run around allowing time for them to go 'hurry-up' before leaving the house, and then they take another hurryup break again when we arrive at the airport prior to check in. Due to the fact that the courier needs to be ready to leave the house 4 hours prior to departure time, we do prefer the afternoon flights so the day goes smoothly

Getting Two Buddies? AIRLINES ALLOW TWO PUPPIES IN A CRATE FOR THE SAME PRICE AS ONE !!! (It doesn't cost any extra for the airlines to ship two pups in the same crate!)

You can prepay your puppy's flight with Continental, or you can pay collect with Delta.

One of the items your puppy will need to have for the flight is a vet health certification which we will take care of for you on this end with your money order made out to Faulkner Animal Hospital.

The cost for this is $65. (If you are shipping 2 puppies it is $100). It also includes a letter of Acclimation which the airlines require stating the vet feels this puppy is in good health to fly out of state and can withstand the temps it will come in contact with along the route. Airlines these days no longer leave animals out on the tarmack or in hot or cold warehouses but still they are required to be able to take the transporting to and from the airplane to the heated and a/c areas they will wait to be picked up in.

US Airways doesnt require a health cert be done when flying in and taking your puppy home onboard the plane so in some cases folks have chosen to fly with them and come out to pick out a pup in person since we dont need to know which it will be ahead of time in order to have that vet checkup and paperwork completed prior to their visit !

Gas/Courier to Vet
$25 made out directly to courier (usually Jake or Christi)

Needed from those who are:

Shipping,
Flying in & driving to our house, or
Meeting us at the airport,

Due to the rising price of gas, we ask for an additional $25 for taking your puppy in for their shipping health cert & letter of acclimation needed to fly to you. This compensates your courier for their time going to the vet for you, & the gas to get there and back. The price of the puppy is the same whether it is sold locally to someone who drives out to our house to buy a pup, or if we send it by air, so this fee covers the additional effort shipping requires.
(you can add in the $25 when you pay for your puppy's balance to Sunshine Beagles)

Supplies

Needed for those who are:
Shipping,
(Optional to be sent ahead of time for those Flying in & driving to our house, or
Meeting us at the airport- you are welcome to simply bring your own sherpa bag, bed and toy with you, or can send a care package ahead of time if you'd like!)

Please order the necessary items thru Petsmart or JeffersPet for your puppy to come home with to you!
This must include

a crate,
a padded bed &
a travel kit.

You are also welcome to send toys with your care package for the litter to enjoy and get their scent on, we'd be happy to go to the post office afterwards and mail them back to you separately on homecoming day if you'd like for us to do that! The flat rate box we usually use runs about $14.95 there is N/C on our part to go to the post office to ship it to you..

If you are flying in, you can bring Sherpa bag and bed with you, or have them pre-shipped to our house.

New Shipping Rule:

Airline rules have recently changed, and they no longer allow additional items inside the crate other than the travel kit required by all airlines, and as a special concession, Sunshine Acres Beagle puppies are allowed to have their own cuddler bed to stay cozy in, versus the shredded newspaper other breeders ship puppies in.

We really appreciate the head of continental's pet safe division for understanding ours are pre-pampered little ones who are accustomed to snuggling up in a nice warm bed, and see newspaper as something to go on, not appopriate in a crate. We jumped through a few hoops in order to acheive this prefferred status as a known shipper with continental, but we feel it is well worth it for everything to go smoother, and our babies to arrive safe and secure in their own crate and bed, with the scent of their littermates on their own familiar bed comforting them on their trip to their new home.

If you would still like to send along toys for your puppy and their littermates to play with, you are welcome to do so and simply have us purchase a flat rate box for you, to send your items back home in at the post office after we check your puppy in at the airport.

If your crate is big enough, the health folder can be taped on top of the crate instead of having to be mailed. It contains books , and shot/worming records , and your pups personal paperwork with mom and dads info. and the litters birthdate ! In some cases the airlines now place the folders under your pups bed inside the crate.

New rule on Crates: The airlines are now only accepting the crates that come with screws.
They can't take the snap-close kind of crates anymore.

This is an airline approved crate- it has the screws.

Courier to Airport
$95 made out directly to courier (usually Jake or Christi)

Needed from those who are:

Shipping, or
Meeting us at the airport,

There is a Courier fee to transport your puppy the 2hrs to the Airport in Charlotte. The courier then carries your pup to Continental or Delta, does the necessary paperwork, walks him or her one last time for you, has it inspected by airport security, and finally sees to it that the Continental PetSafe or Delta PetFirst has your puppy 2hrs prior to Departure time, as the airline requires. This all means the courier must wake the puppies up in the morning, feed everyone, give water, and let them have plenty of time to run around at our house before making the car trip,set up your pups crate and make sure all the paperwork is in hand .. then leave the house toward the Airport at least 4 hrs in advance to flight time. Afternoon flights work best so that everything can get done in the morning before departure in Charlotte! Sometimes we like to travel with the courier to be sure all goes smoothly for you, but the courier does the driving and lifting :)
This courier fee is $95. (If you are shipping 2 puppies, this is $150) depending on who the courier is we will have you make out a separate check to them for their time and gas .

We can also make a courier trip to come meet you at the airport if you're able to get a flight out here and back!

We do have folks fly in to meet us at the Airport, and fly home with their puppies on board with them! Sometimes the puppies draw admirers :)

After all of your items have arrived, and we have agreed on booking a good day for a courier trip to the airport, we will be all set for your new family member to fly home to you! Please let us know they've arrived safely, and we definately look forward to your updates on how things are going, and we love pictures!! (If you are able to snap some at your airport, we'd love to see those too!)

An airport approved plastic crate like these work best.
Keep in mind that once the pet arrives the items are yours to keep for the pup's use!

Some folks like to go ahead and get a larger Intermediate size so it

will last their pup even when grown. be sure to have the dimensions when booking your puppies flight. They will also ask weight , their cut off on pricing is at 50lbs and most are 15 to 20lbs total with crate bed travel kit and puppy in them.

The airline will ask if the pet and crate are under 50lbs... and of course they always are !

Package Deal In many cases we have a new crate, bed, and travel kit on hand here and if you'd prefer to simply purchase this package deal from us that is perfectly fine, you can just add in the costs to the balance & we can put together the shipping items for you. This helps when things move quickly and can make it easier on you to get everything taken care of in time for homecoming!Just ask us about purchasing your items from us! Larger crates for older pups are slightly higher .
around $ 217-$257. (average shipping price depending on airline chosen. May vary due to fuel surcharge fees and taxes)	Continental PetSafe requires PrePaid Shipping at check in. This must be sent before the flight so that we can pay for the Continental flight on our end before the puppy can board their flight home. Ask them to include the taxes and new fuel surcharge in their quote. $5 can be added for extra insurance to cover the cost of everything they cover up to $750. so if your puppy is more valuable than this we suggest adding extra insurance coverage if youd like, although over the last 15 years of shipping there has never been any issues ! Delta Pet First Airline's shipping Fee can be paid to them when your puppy arrives. You can pay it directly to Delta, Collect/COD in many cases when the pup arrives.
These extras needed when shipping must be paid prior to flight. (excluding Delta's Collect fee), Please do not send these payments until we have discussed everything and you have asked us about the balance to send. You can mail money orders/ cashiers checks made out appropriately, or if needed you could choose to paypal the fees to us to cover everything if we have given you the paypal information.

Thanks for the info on the 1/2 and 1/2 and the canned food. I get him to drink water by putting it on my hand and he licks it but I was wondering. I have been pounding the food for him to eat, so I am going to the pet store to get him some canned food to give him a little.
